The name "Appaloosa" was derived from the slurring of "A Palouse," referring to horses from the Palouse River area of the Pacific Northwest inhabited by the Nez Perce Indians. Skilled breeders and horsemen, the Nez Perce refined the breed, which was revered for its speed, stamina, and sure-footedness. |
